What is the difference between the Treasurer's Office and Iowa DOT Driver's Services?

A.

Crawford County Treasurer's Offices has three departments. First, the Tax Department collects Property Taxes. Second, the Motor Vehicle Department completes title transfers, vehicle registrations, and vehicle security interest notations. Third, Driver's Services issues Iowa ID cards, Iowa driver's licenses, CDLS, and permits. Driver's Services also provides vehicle, motorcycle, and commercial testing (written and on the road).

How do I register a newly-purchased vehicle?

A.

If you purchased a new vehicle, you will need to bring in the title, Bill of Sale, Iowa driver's license or Iowa ID, and Application for Certificate of Title by all owners.

You will need a Damage Disclosure Statement for vehicles 7 years and newer.

You will need an Odometer Disclosure Statement for vehicles 10 years and newer.

I moved from out of state and need Iowa plates. What do I need to bring?

A.

You will need the out of state title, out of state registration, Iowa driver's license, Iowa ID, or social security card, proof of Iowa residents (mail within the last 30 days from a place of business), and application for certificate of title signed by all owners.

How long do I have to title and register a newly purchased vehicle?

A.

You have 30 days from the date of sale to title and register a new vehicle. 

Q.

How long do I have to renew my plates and registration?

A.

The month before the plates are due, the month of the plates, and the month after.

Example: September plate renewal — August, September, October.

Q.

I lost the sticker off my plate. How do I get a new one?

A.

You can get a new one at the Treasurer's Office. Bring your current registration with you. There may be a $3 replacement registration fee.

Where can I renew my vehicle registration?

A.

You may renew your registration online on the Iowa Treasurers website by selecting your county of residence. You may renew your registration by mail, drop box, or in person at your county of residence.

I lost one of my license plates. How do I get a new one?

A.

You can get a new one at the Treasurer's Office. Bring the plate you have and your current registration with you. There will be a $5 replacement plate fee. 

Q.

I sold or junked my vehicle, what do I do with my plates and how do I get a refund?

A.

If you sold your vehicle and do not plan to replace it, turn your plates in within six months of the date of sale and we will apply for a refund if there is $10 or more credit on the plates.

If you sold your vehicle and plan to replace it within the next six months, you may use those plates on the next vehicle if there is $10 or more credit on the plates. 

If you have turned in your leased vehicle, you will need to fill out a Claim for Refund and a Lease Termination Form, along with your plates. You can then apply for a refund as long as there is $10 or more of credit on the plates.

If you have moved out of state, you will need to complete a Claim for Refund form and also send in a copy of your current out of state registration. You can apply for a refund as long as there is $10 or more of credit on the plates.

Q.

How do I title and register a homemade trailer?

A.

Get a weigh ticket. 

If the weight is less than 2,000 lbs, you will need the weigh ticket and Iowa driver's license or Iowa ID. Your small trailer will have a registration only. 

If the weight is over 2,000 lbs, please contact Motor Vehicle Enforcement at (515) 237-3050 or invbureau@iowadot.us. Motor Vehicle Enforcement will help you title the trailer.

What do I need to bring if I have an address change?

A.

Call our office with the new address or come in with the old registrations and change of address.

Q.

How do I get a Persons with Disabilities plate or parking permit?

A.

You will need a letter from a doctor stating you qualify for a permanent or temporary disability.

Q.

How do I apply for a replacement title?

A.

All owners will need to sign an application for replacement title. There is a $25 title fee and a five-day waiting period once the application and fee have been received. 

Q.

What do I do when an owner on a title(s) is deceased?

A.

There are many circumstances regarding the death of an owner listed on a title. Please contact our office at (712) 263-2178 for questions. Please have the title(s) with you in case we have questions.

A.
